SOUL DOPE SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: INFINITE CAPACITY

"There are two things I noticed immediately when I encountered this artist:  1.  He has no shortage of energy on stage.  2.  His love for Hip Hop is clear. "

~Qamil

JULY 2016
Location: Scarlet & Grey Cafe (Columbus, OH)
Open Mic Winner: Infinite Capacity
Specialty:  Hip Hop
Interviewed by:  Qamil

Q.  What do you bring to the music table?
A. Energy and intellect.

Q. How would you describe your style as an artist?
A. Fast paced realism, combined with intensity and heart.

Q. Who IS Infinite Capacity?

A. Justin Kirkpatrick. I thrive under pressure and bring the heat every time. Consistency is crucial. I have an insatiable need to reach the ears of the masses. I wear my heart and my mind on my sleeve, a sleeve that happens to be guarded by transparency. You can see them, but good luck touching them.

Q.  How did you get your start in music?
A. I was raised by a musician, my father Rodney Kirkpatrick II, and a beautiful mother, Dianna Wilson. I picked up the musical roots brewed by my father and rolled with them. I took up drumming at 12 years old when my father bought me a drum set so I wouldn’t bug him in the garage when he was working on cars. At the age of 16 I started IT Media at the Wayne County Schools Career Center. I found a niche in the rap scene at the career center and made friends that put me in a position to produce instrumentals and it grew on me so quickly that I had my own set up in a matter of weeks. From there on out I was hooked and started free-styling in local cyphers in Wooster, and Orrville Ohio. They weren’t big gatherings, but they did do the trick to help get my bars up and my mentals on the right level. By the time I was 17 I was writing full songs and fitting them with self-produced beats, as time went on the grind became a routine, a job, and even now, at 27, I’m still grinding to be heard, to get my energy and message to the right crowd and expedite this inevitable rising that is coming.

Q.  Who inspires you?
A. Mostly my father, my daughter, always. My motivation comes from seeing her happy. Musically I’d say that Tech N9ne is prominent, simply because he has the hardest grind and biggest ambition I’ve ever seen.

Q . If you could have a dinner party and discuss music with 5 artists (dead or alive) who would be at that table?
A.
1. Timbaland
2. Dr. Dre
3. Tech N9ne
4. Ludacris
5. Royce da 5’ 9”

Q. If you could go on a world tour right now, what other artist would you want to take with you?
A. I’m a Technician; I’d have to roll with Strange Music Tour.

Q. What music are you listening to now? What’s spinning in your world?
A.Busta Rhymes’ Return of the Dragon Mixtape ; Kendrick Lamar | J Cole – Black Friday (Insane Track)

Grind Mode Cyphers

Q. What is your favorite album of all time?
A. Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy

Q. What is your favorite part about being an artist?
A.  The feeling of looking out at people rocking with you while you’re on stage, and also, the feeling of when you know you are mixing down a fire track, the adrenaline that comes along with it.

Q. When people see you perform what do you want them to take away?

A.  That they just watched a dude kill the microphone whit a ridiculous amount of intensity, heart and passion.

Q.  What has been your biggest challenge as an artist?
A.  Getting noticed by the right people. OR at that, having the time to put forth maximum effort while raising a young daughter ( 5 yr.) and having a full time career. Capital investment funds would be my final answer.

Q.  What is your absolute favorite song to perform?

A.  Shuck and Jive (Will be featured in the upcoming Soul Dope Sunday performance)

Q. Favorite meal?
A, Salmon filet w/asparagus and fully loaded baked potato

Q. Favorite movie?

A. The Matrix Trilogy

Q. Favorite Hip-Hop album?

A. Tech N9ne- All 6's and 7's

Q. Tell me something about yourself that would surprise people.
A.  I'm a "Metal-Head"  I love heavy metal music (Melodic, core, many subgenre's) Examples: Killswitch Engage, I Am Abomination, Volumes, Memphis May Fire, Make Them Suffer

Q.  Any advice for other young artists that are thinking about getting into music professionally?

A. Practice, patience, practice

Q. What is your ultimate goal as an artist?
A. My ultimate goal is to have a platinum or gold album.

Q. Where can people find you online?

#SOULDOPESUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: Amari Moore

"The 1st Annual Soul Dope Sunday Open Mic championship was in full swing.  Performers were going up.  The judges were posted at their table watching. There were singers.  There were rappers.  All talented.   I arrived just in time for round 2.   This young guy hops on the mic and sings.  I've never seen him before.   It didn't take long for him to impress me.  His vocals and lyrics were strong.  I'm thinking, Where did HE come from?  He kills round 2.  The crowd loves him.   He comes back for round 3 and raps.  Well.  I wasn't expected THAT.  He wins the competition like a pro.  Just when I thought I couldn't be more blown away,  I find out he's 17 year's old. "

JUNE 2016
Location: Scarlet & Grey Cafe (Columbus, OH)
Open Mic Winner: Amari Moore
Specialty:  R&B/Hip Hop
Interviewed by:  Qamil

Q.  What do you bring to the music table?
A.  I think I'm able to create something for people that could relate to my music because anything I put out or perform musically comes from my heart and I believe I could really be somebody with this if I keep pushing

Q. How would you describe your style as an artist?
A. I honestly don't know to be honest I'm an R&B/Hip Hop Artist but my sound is not the same from anybody else in the game because I'm still tryna find my sound and I believe in due time I'll be able to determine my style as an artist.

Q. Who IS Amari Moore?
A.  Amari Moore is an 18yr old young adult originally born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but been living in Mansfield, Ohio since the age of 3 who tryna find his way through every pain, struggle, and suffering in his life to create a better living not only for himself but for his family as well.

Q.  How did you get your start in music?

A. I've been involved with music since I was 6yrs old, actually I had an opportunity once to become a recording artist when I was 13 but me being at that age I wasn't ready for it but as I was growing up I've always created my own songs but I just didn't think it would be good enough for me to display it to anybody so I always trashed every song I wrote. As the years went by my high school junior year I got back into trying to write and was getting frustrated because it seemed like nothing was delivered right for my intention. Until one day my senior year 17yrs old I was going through some things and I finally got to sit down and get lost in my thoughts and just write a song and I haven't stopped writing since that day I put out my first song on soundclound

Q. What is your ultimate goal as an artist?
A. My ultimate goal is to have a platinum or gold album.

Q . If you could have a dinner party and discuss music with 5 artists (dead or alive) who would be at that table?

A. Tupac, Nas, Jay Z, 50 Cent, and Snoop Dogg

Q. If you could go on a world tour right now, what other artist would you want to take with you?

A.  If it were up to me I'd take a couple local artists from my city also major artists like Lil Herb, 112, Jagged Edge, Casey Veggies, Chris Brown, August Alsina, J.Cole, Jill Scott, and Erykah Badu

Q. What music are you listening to now? What’s spinning in your world?
A. I listen to a lot of 90s R&B and new R&B artist such as Bryson Tiller, Jacquees, PartyNextDoor, TyUs, and Tory Lanez

Q. What is your favorite album of all time?
A.  The 112 Album & Erykah Badu's - Baduizm

Q.  Who inspires you?
A. People like Bryson Tiller and August Alsina inspire me because I wanna be just as great as those guys.

Q. What is your favorite part about being an artist?
A.  The writing and arrangement part of a song and just the whole creative process gives me a rush of anxiousness.

Q. When people see you perform what do you want them to take away?
A.  I want them to take my lyrics and how I deliver them to the heart.

Q.  What has been your biggest challenge as an artist?
A. So far my only challenge as an artist is getting getting 3+ songs done all in one day.

Q. Favorite color?
A. I don't have a favorite color really but I wear red a lot so I guess it would be red.

Q. Favorite meal?
A. Chicken & Shrimp Alfredo

Q. Tell me something about yourself that would surprise people.
A. Well when I was in school I graduated a week and a couple days early don't know if that's really surprising or not but it was to me in my case

Q.  Any advice for other young artists that are thinking about getting into music professionally?

A. My advice would be to never quit and don't start something unless you know for sure you're able to finish and execute off it... And to keep in mind that music was never meant to be easy but at the end of the day no matter how well you do or you think you're doing there's always room for improvement

#SOULDOPESUNDAY SPOTLIGHT: MIKE SOLO

"I watched his performance from the back of the roomHe had people rapping along and bouncing up and down.  If we judged on audience participation ALONE he would have won! It just so happens that the song was dope too."
~Qamil

MARCH 2016
Location: Scarlet & Grey Cafe (Columbus, OH)
Open Mic Winner: Mike Solo
SpecialtyHip Hop
Interviewed by:  Qamil

Q.  What do you bring to the music table?
A. At the risk of sounding cliche, I consider myself a very weird blend of 90s hip hop, 70s soul, a little bit of country, with a hint of heavy metal and punk.

Q. How would you describe your style as an artist?
A. I would say my style is a mixture of in-your-face aggression, thoughtful introspection, with a little bit of goofball thrown in to keep people guessing.

Q. If you could go on a world tour right now, what other artist would you want to take with you?
A.  I would have to say Tech N9ne. He has a close connection to his fanbase, and I would want to have the kind of energy that sort of connection brings.

Q. Who IS Mike Solo?
A.  Just an awkward, goofy white guy who loves to write and perform, is VERY opinionated, and has a twisted sense of humor.

Q.  Hip Hop is a diverse genre in that artists and fans come from many different backgrounds BUT there are people that are always skeptical of "white rappers".  Does this bother you or effect your vibe when you are walking into shows?

A.  It's funny, because when I first started putting any sort of serious effort into writing and recording, Eminem was still a few months away from releasing "My Name Is", so the idea of being able to "make it" as a white rapper was limited to Vanilla Ice, the Beastie Boys, and that wannabe reggae rapper Snow. Then Em dropped onto the scene like a Caucasian Nuke, and suddenly every white rapper that attempted to come out got compared to him. So it bothered me early on. These days, I kind of use it to my advantage. I'm sort of unassuming and mild-mannered, then I step on stage, grab the mic, and start going and people are generally shocked. I can't say I don't enjoy that sensation of knowing I've caught people off guard. Especially when it's a crowd that's more than 50% non-white. They may still not care for the songs I've performed, but they almost always look at me different walking off stage than they did before I went on.

Mike Solo #LIVE

Q . If you could have a dinner party and discuss music with 5 artists (dead or alive) who would be at that table?

A. Oh man. I would have to say Marvin Gaye, Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, Eminem, and Rick Rubin. Not only for the unique knowledge and skills of each, but for the sheer entertainment value of having such a diverse group of guys talking music.

Q. What music are you listening to now? What’s spinning in your world?
A. Currently I'm listening to "Fuck Swag" by Rittz

Q. What is your ultimate goal as an artist?

A. My ultimate goal is just to be able to look back when I'm an old man and know that something I created made people happy, eased some sort of pressure from their daily lives, or even reached a few troubled souls and kept them from hurting themselves or got them through a dark time. Fame and fortune aren't really a major concern for me at this point. I'm a man at peace with my life. I just want others to feel the same, and hope that a song I put out there helps someone else achieve that sort of peace, like music has done for me over the years.

Q. What is your favorite album of all time?

A. If I were to go on sheer amount of times I played it, front to back, it would have to be "Beautiful Struggle" by Talib Kweli. "Around My Way" is easily the most beautiful hip hop song of all time.

Q. What is your favorite part about being an artist?

A.  That's easy.  Performing on stage.  And if you would have known me in high school, that would be a serious shock.

Q. When people see you perform what do you want them to take away?

A.  I just want them to KNOW, without a doubt, that I gave them every ounce of sweat and energy I could possibly give for the amount of time I was up there, and whether we feeling it or not, they walk away saying "damn, he went hard."

Q.  Was there a defining moment that made you decide to seriously pursue a career in music?

A.  I would say the closest thing to a defining moment was performing in front of nearly 1,000 people and feeling that rush when I performed a song that got them hyped up and cheering.  There was an added bonus of having someone in the crowd who didn't like our group, and seeing his face when we got that reaction was priceless. Petty?  Maybe.  But if felt good. lol

Q. Favorite color?
A. Red.

Q. Favorite meal?
A. My very own Apple Cider-infused grilled chicken. Sides are irrelevant.

Q. Tell me something about yourself that would surprise people.
A.  I don't think there's much about me that would surprise anybody.  Atleast nothing that I would be comfortable revealing in an interview. lol
